Crucible Allusions

One allusion Miller used is New Jerusalem, meaning the holy city of heaven in the Bible. I believe Miller used this allusion in order to show us how his characters viewed their land in America. They believed that they were the ones who were selected by God to find this New Jerusalem. But I also think Miller had intentions to make this allusion ironic because when they Puritans came to America to pursue religious freedom because they were persecuted for their beliefs in England. However, they also persecuted others for having different religious views because they thought that other religions would corrupt and bring deceitful ideas to their New Jerusalem. I also believe Miller used this allusion to show the vengeance of the Puritans, since they felt the need to persecute because they themselves were persecuted (Miller 1237). Another allusion used by Miller is the use of Lucifer, which is the Devil. I believe Miller used Lucifer as an allusion because he wanted to express the importance that the Devil had on the characters of The Crucible.I think Miller thought this was necessary since it shows that they both need and want someone to blame for everything that is goes wrong in Salem (Miller 1260). They accuse people of being witches, who were there because of Lucifer. The use of this allusion several times throughout the Crucible suggests that the Puritans were kind of obsessed with Lucifer, thus revealing that Miller had high regards for the Salem characters religious beliefs..This also shows that vengeance was very common since envy of the miserable toward the happy resulted in revenge (Miller 1237). Martin Luther, a German theologian who led the Protestant Reformation, was another allusion Miller used in The Crucible. The reason why I believe Miller used Martin was because Martin had an experience that closely resembled that of the Salem witch trials. He too was blamed of being affiliated with Hell and accused of heresy. So Miller wanted to show that trials were not only held in Salem but in other parts of the world. In the case of Martin, he also then accused his enemies of being in an alliance with Hell, similar to how Tituba accused someone else when she was accused (Miller 1260). But for Luther, his case was more complicated in that he thought that he had contact with the Devil and argued theology with him. So I believe this allusion was ultimately used to provide similar examples of the problems that were happening in Salem. The last allusion that Miller uses is the Inquisition.I think Miller used this allusion because it sort of resembles the Salem witch hunts of The Crucible. Instead of only mentioning witch hunts in early America, he shows us other examples of people being accused of wrong doings and then blaming it on others. Pope Gregory IX proposed the Inquisition in 1231 and Catholic judges started accused people of treason and heresy (Miller 1253). In both cases there were deaths because of persecutions. So he wanted us to see the similarities between other cases of accusations, vengeances, fear, and greed.

Family and Tan Ling Wei

I am an ordinary soon to be 20 years old girl from an ordinary family with extraordinary fantasies. My name is Tan Ling Wei, but since everybody is having a difficult time to pronounce Chinese names, I would rather be called as Zoey. I’m a Malaysian Chinese, and I was born in a big city with big shopping malls – Kuala Lumpur. When I was younger, I used to stay in Bentong which is my hometown in Pahang with my parents together with my grandparents. Since my parents were busy earning for a living, my grandparents were my guardians. Grandpa was my favourite person because he was the one who pampered me the most.He would grant whatever wish I wished for, even if it was the stars in the sky which takes about more than 50,000 years to make the journey. I remembered there was once, my grandpa took me out on a bike to buy me a school bag. I was so young and I did not know how to place my legs on the passenger seat, consequently I hurt my foot by getting it trapped in the bicycl e wheel. I was crying very loudly on the way home because I couldn’t stand the pain and there was a lot of blood. Grandpa’s face was full with guilt when he saw his beloved grandchild got hurt. Eventually, the crying stopped after grandpa’s continuous comforting. The biggest gratitude goes to my mom. She’s not only an ordinary fulltime housewife, but also my dad’s part time personal assistant. On the other hand, she is the one who travels up and down to send me to university and my brother to school. Well, to put it in a nutshell, she has no time for herself at all. When I was 2 years old, I was admitted into the hospital and told that I had bronchitis. She was the one who took up the responsibility to take care of me, staying in the ward with me even when she was pregnant with my brother. A mother’s love is indeed instinctual, unconditional and forever for her child. The closest person when I was young was my dad. He was the one who would pat iently read me poems and stories when I was a baby. Whenever he got back from his work, he would snuggle me in his arms and sing me nursery rhymes. But as I age and hit puberty, our relationship drifted apart. I stopped having physical contacts with dad. Perhaps I was shy since I started noticing changes between females and males. However, the love I had for dad has never changed. Instead of expressing, it lays hidden. Ever heard of love and hate and relationship? Well, that’s the relationship I have with my 17 years old brother. When we were young, we were like cats and dogs, fighting for toys, practically we fight for everything even until today. Even so, blood is thicker than water. Whenever we face any problems in life, we would console each other, and of course be there for each other. My brother and I have one thing in common, that is we love playing computer games. Whenever there’s free time, both of us would spend time playing Blackshot together either as team m ates or rival to kill the time. Which girl would ever play computer games? That’s the common question whenever I come across to any of my friends.Well, that would be me. The reason why am I so boyish is because when I was a toddler, I mixed mostly with my cousin brothers. When I finally got into a primary school, my friends were all boys, because they were less dramatic. During the recess time, the boys would invite me to the field for football. Overtime, my character died hard and hence the boyishness and clumsiness. I love to read since I started my high school. According to one of my Indian good friend, my English was very bad when I was in form 1. We still laugh about it today whenever she tells the story of me speaking broken English in class.I started mixing around with the English educated friends to improve my English. Whenever I’ve difficulty understanding any English vocabulary, I would reach out to my friends and ask for an explanation. Furthermore, I starte d to build up the interest in reading. In the year 2008, when I was in my form 3, Twilight Saga had become famous as a romance novel about vampire love story. Since then, I started to have crazy fantasies of becoming a vampire as I could be an immortal and that I could keep my youth forever. As silly as I could be, reality is always cruel. No one can ever live as an immortal.Everyone’s life will come to an end eventually when the time comes. Well, that’s my autobiography, a really simple one but of course, there’s much more in life that I couldn’t express in words here in this essay. I believe nobody is perfect. Everyone has their own flaws, so do I. Life is just like a roller coaster with ups and downs. It just boils down to every individual on how they deal with it. Last but not leaset, I would like to end with a favourite quote of mine about life, â€Å"Life doesn't require that we be the best, only that we try our best. †- H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

((((9))))) - Essay Example Interacting with the playdough empowers children to express themselves in creative and unique ways. This fact stood out since it is an important concept that strongly supports DAP classroom. Play gives children a sense of competency and gives them the inordinate opportunity to independently develop socially and emotional. This has changed my previous perception that the playdough is an irrelevant component of the kindergarten program and I started perceiving play as an important child’s â€Å"work†. As a teacher, observation of children’s interactions with the playdough should be observed to ensure that early learning standards are appropriately met. Similarly, I have to persuade parents about the value of resourceful play experiences in a classroom. A substantial concept that I perceive to be new is the importance of imaginative games. This information will make my classroom more interactive and make students more creative by allowing them to engage in activities such as dressing up and constructing cubby houses using blankets or boxes. Moreover, it will help children connect and enhance pathways in their brains making them more adaptive to the changing global education environment. However, time and financial resources will prove to be barriers since there is the stipulated curriculum to be followed and purchasing toys and other play materials is substantially costly. However, these constraints must be overcome by utilization of readily available time and

Will a global society and economy still need a dominant, Essay

Will a global society and economy still need a dominant, professionally-run global press Describe what it would look like or what would replace it. Consider what its role and influence would be - Essay Example Due to technological revolution, there has been a fast development of the digital communication through the global press (Flew, 2007). For capitalists, they argue that the human races is entering the golden age where all that people would need to do is to sit back and let the markets and technology do the shopping for them. This is because the global press industry is changing quite fast and hence a demand for instant coverage and the need to decrease the budgets with the sole objective of releasing ethical news. With all eyes on globalization, change in technology and ethical transmission of news with emphasis on deadline ethics, professionally run global media will change how individuals think with the contemporary society (Flew, 2007). Whereas previously the media system were primarily remote, in the past few years we have witnessed the growth of the professionally run global press with two distinct but related facets. This is because professionally run global press is cutting across the world by facilitating faster cross cutting of the world through technology. This is to aid the firms in the global economy to capitalize on the potential of growth abroad without being impacted by flurry competitors given that the local economies already is saturated with incremental expansion. The other facet is that the consolidations and convergence all depend about the day given that some of the global media houses are increasingly becoming concentrated. This is because the major players in the media industry are majorly branches of the global media conglomerates due to the onset of mergers and acquisitions (SHERMAN, (2002, October 2). It is a fact that the global American media leaves many gaps to be desired whether you want news about the media, the war on terrorism, global trade or simply general information and the understanding of the majority of the world’s population who are non-Americans. This has made the reporting of news difficult due to the

Starbucks Issues and Solutions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Starbucks Issues and Solutions - Essay Example Certain solutions for resolving the ethical dilemma of becoming a curator of popular culture for Starbuck’s are presented here. First are the alleged financial links to the Israeli government. The strategies used by boycott organizers to generate awareness for their campaign and to manage media usage to target desired audiences are also discussed (Knudsen, K., Aggarwal & P. Maamoun, A. 2008). Starbucks was targeted because of its CEO’s comments on Israel-Palestinian conflict issue. Starbucks was the prime target of an Arab boycott after remarks CEO Howard Shultz made in Seattle. Boycott strategies have been classified into three domains: awareness, media, and targeting. Many people have begun to regard Starbucks’ corporate image as snooty. Customers are of diverse ethnic, income and age groups (Cherian, C., Dasgupta, N. & Doreswamy, A. G., 2007). Starbucks has learned to embrace the diversity and provide better customer service. Every campaign is approved through a panel about potential issues the adjusted based on its recommendations. The best course of action is a method of strategic cooperation (Mahapatra, S. & Saklani, A., 2007). Three things can trigger boycott calls: government actions, corporate actions, and individual actions. Starbucks should respond to rumors, distance itself from controversial issues, making charitable contributions, emphasize local connections, demonstrate the impact on the local economy, localize the marketing mix and influence government actions.

Women's rights and culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Women's rights and culture - Essay Example The Islamic law promotes patriarchy in the society giving women only a few privileges and defining their position as low as that of men in the society. Men are given many privileges and are highly esteemed in the society. The author sought to highlight the different ways in which the Islamic culture acts as a barrier for women who seek to acquire equal rights with men. As highlighted in the article, it is not easy for women from Muslim countries to enjoy equal rights enjoyed by men because the society is highly conservative (Cherif 1145). In this paper, I will analyze the views of the author and critique the evidence presented in support of the main ideas in the article. The author presents the context of the research by highlighting how Islamic culture determines inheritance and nationality rights. An in-depth description is presented as the author describes the stated problem that motivated this research. In order to ascertain that Islamic culture prevents women from advancing, seven different but related hypotheses were formulated. The author then embarked on empirical tests in an effort to collect data that could help reject or accept the hypotheses formulated. Notably, the focus of the author is to compare the status of women in countries that have embraced modernity and allowed women to acquire their rights and advance in education and those that have remained highly conservative. The author described both the dependent and independent variables defined for the study carried out. The purpose of the dependent variable was to assess whether countries have adopted laws that give men and women an equal standing or status (1147). On the other hand, the author identifies an independent variable as domestic institution, institutions tenure, treaty, treaty tenure, and advocacy groups. All the empirical tests carried out and their

Big Data, Big Data Analytics, Data Mining and their applications in Essay

Big Data, Big Data Analytics, Data Mining and their applications in Industrial Engineering - Essay Example The usage of predictive analytics in big data situation can help power plants forecast production size and also gain insight on prevailing challenges within the plant. Energy companies that are capable of managing and analysing high volume data by using advanced softwares like IBM information systems or any other suitable statistical software, can always transform their data into useful and profitable strategies. For instance, developing efficient demand response strategies requires that utilities apply innovative analytics across a mix of data about clients, consumption rate, generation capacity, physical grid unique behaviour, weather, and energy commodities market. A Company’s decision backed by data are always more forward and acceptable as compared to using prevailing perceived information about the energy market. As mentioned before, power plants are welcoming the usage of smart grids and meters as a long term strategy that enables efficient energy supply. Energy companies can therefore create better power storage solutions, include uniform power generation points and in the process eliminate the need for new power plants. Essentially, this will enable power consumers to have more control over the amount of power/electricity they use. A higher number of meter reads per day of power usage by consumers basically generate an overwhelming amount of data. This amount of data presents a great opportunity for power plants to study their consumers’ behaviours and also understand how market segmentation of customers can help industries know the amount of power output to achieve. For example, if you are an electricity producer, time of use pricing usually makes cost-savvy retail consumers to run dryers, dishwashers and washing machines at off-peak periods. Evidently, these segment of consumers do not only save cash but they also need less generation capacity from their electricity providers.
