Kevin Attell writes criticisms of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and details how he wrote very radically for his era in â€Å" An Overview Of Mice and Men.† James Gray writes a great biography in â€Å" John (Ernest) Steinbeck† giving the reader more than enough†¦show more content†¦According to Gray his mother did not want him to become a writer, he still went on to become one anyway and wrote, â€Å" Things are as they are because they must be† (Steinbeck, Gray) Steinbeck attended Stanford University for five years on and off but never earned a degree. He worked odd jobs involving hard physical labor and this is where he met his close nit friends that he counted on. Gray brought lots of Steinbeck’s life into light for the world to see where his writings are coming from. James Gray biography â€Å" John (Ernest) Steinbeck† was very intriguing. It was very int eresting to know that Steinbeck went to university all those years to never earn a degree. He preferred to live amongst the hard workers and befriend them and know what they know. Steinbeck’s later writing Travels with Charley, was supposed to be his account of him and his dog Charley cross country in a pick-up with a camper on the back documenting his encounters with American’s now (in the early 60’s). Critics later tried to discredit these accounts saying he lied about most of the trip there were only a few instances that he was even in the camper and most of the time he stayed in hi-end hotels with his wife in totally different states then he says he was in. The critics were claiming this would be a story also not a documentary as he was claiming.
